Charles Pickering Bowditch (1842-1921). From the Massachusetts Historical Society, 5th Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment carte de visite album, Photo 228.4.
Charles Pickering Bowditch was born on 30 September 1842 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.2,3 He married Cornelia Livingstone Rockwell, daughter of Julius Rockwell and Lucy Forbes Walker, on 7 June 1866 in Lenox, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts.2,3 He died on 1 June 1921 at home in Jamaica Plain, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, at age 78 from heart disease.4 He was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery (Tulip Path Lot 1208) in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.5
He graduated with an A.B. degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, in 18633,6, then joined Co. A of the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry for service in the Civil War. This was an all-black unit (except for the officers), formed in May 1863 at Camp Meigs in Readville, Massachusetts. He entered as a 2nd lieutenant, commissioned on 23 May 1863, was promoted to 1st lieutenant two weeks later, on 7 June, then to captain three weeks after that, on 29 June. The regiment left Camp Meigs on 21 July, traveling by ship and train to Folly Island, just south of Charleston, South Carolina, where they built defenses and performed other fatigue duty (i.e., non-combat work) in the area.7
On 26 September 1863 he requested leave due to ill health. A statement of certification by the regimental surgeon says he had been suffering from diarrhea for four weeks, would be unfit for duty for at least 30 days, and should return to the north. He was granted 20 days leave on 2 October, and received two additional 20-day extensions before returning to duty on 2 December.8
He was mustered out of the 55th Infantry on 6 February 1864, to accept an appointment as captain of Co. F in the 5th Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry.9 This was also an all-black unit, formed at Camp Meigs in late 1863 and early 1864.10 Charles's brother Henry also joined the regiment, as a major, on 26 March 1864.11
They left Camp Meigs in early May, traveling to Washington, D.C., then to Fort Monroe in northern Virginia. They engaged Confederate forces at Baylor's Farm on 15 June during the advance on Petersburg, losing three men killed and nineteen wounded. The regiment's commander was among the wounded, and Charles's brother Maj. Henry Bowditch took command. They attacked Confederate lines that evening, capturing five artillery batteries and driving the Confederates back toward Petersburg. The regiment then moved to Point Lookout, Maryland, in late June, where they performed guard duty over Confederate prisoners.10
On 5 August 1864 he wrote a letter resigning his commission, having never fully recovered from the chronic diarrhea he had contracted while with the 55th Infantry a year earlier. His resignation was accepted, and he was formally discharged on 23 August.12
He returned to Harvard, graduating with an A.M. degree in 1866.3,6 He worked in Pennsylvania for a time digging oil wells, then as an estate trustee in Geneseo, Livingston Co., New York,2 where he and his wife Cornelia are listed in the 1870 census.13 They moved to Boston in November 187214, where they lived the rest of their lives. They were at 99 Moss Hill Rd. in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood from at least 1900 to 1920, and were apparently fairly wealthy. Their census entries include from 2-4 servants, mostly Irish women.15,16,17,18
He worked primarily as an estate trustee, but he also served as a director at various firms, including several cotton mills in Massachusetts and Georgia, the Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Co., the Boston and Providence Railroad, American Telephone and Telegraph, and American Bell Telephone.14 He was vice president of American Bell from 1 October 1883 to 1 December 1886.2 He was also a trustee of the Boston Athenaeum14, and for many years was on the board of the Farm and Trades School in Boston, including time as the school's president and treasurer.4,19
He traveled extensively, with trips to England and Scotland in the summer of 1886, to Mexico and Yucatan in early 18882, to Florida, Nassau, Cuba, and Honduras from January to April 189020, to North Africa, Italy, and England from February to October 1898, to North Africa, Italy, Spain, and England from November 1901 to July 19022, and to China and Japan in 1911.21
He was very interested in anthropology and archeology, and was a founding member of the American Anthropological Association. He was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1892, serving as treasurer from 1905 to 1915, and as president from 1917 to 1919.6
His trip to Mexico in 1888 sparked a strong interest in the Mayan civilization, and he began planning and funding anthropological expeditions to the area through Boston's Peabody Museum. He was elected as a trustee of the museum in 1894, helped establish Harvard's Division of Anthropology, and published and translated several papers and other works in the area.6
He was also interested in history and genealogy, and was a member of numerous historical and genealogical organizations. In 1897, with Harrison Ellery, he wrote and published the three-volume Pickering Genealogy. His interest in the controversy over the authorship of Shakespeare's works led to his publication of "Bacon's Connection with the First Folio of Shakespeare."6

Relationship3rd cousin 3 times removed of Jane Ellen Bowditch
William Ernestus Bowditch was born on 10 April 1850 in Brookline, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts.1,3 He married Margaret Lyon Swann, daughter of Thomas Laurens Swann and Elizabeth Bowers Lyon, on 12 November 1889 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.4,3 He died on 22 May 1918 at home in Milton, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, at age 68.5,3 He was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery (Tulip Path, Lot 1208) in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.6
He later switched the order of his given names, going by Ernest William Bowditch.7,5,3
He studied chemistry and mining from 1865 to 1869 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, but left before graduating. He then went west to Nebraska, where he worked a few months for the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad. He returned home to Boston, and was appointed assistant mineralogist for the Darien Expedition, a canal survey expedition being sent to Panama.8
In 1870 he began working as a civil engineer for Shedd & Sawyer in Boston, then set up his own office the next year. He was involved in the design of several large estates, including The Breakers and Chateau-sur-Mer in Newport, Rhode Island. He also designed and improved many large parks and cemeteries, including the Metropark system, Rockefeller and Shaker Lakes Parks, and Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.8 He and his wife Margaret are listed in Milton, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, along with their children and five servants.7,9
He was apparently interested in family history, and on 15 September 1900, after seeing a notice in the Boston Transcript about the death of Joseph Henry Bowditch in Micaville, North Carolina, addressed a letter "To the Heirs of Joseph H. Bowditch" asking about their relationship. He also asked about any family bibles, letters, or heirlooms they might have "perhaps with a view to acquiring them." He and Joseph's daughter Georgiana Bowditch apparently began corresponding, and 12 years later, on 24 January 1913, he and his daughter Elizabeth met Georgiana in Morganton, North Carolina, traveling there by train from New York. After having breakfast together, he and Elizabeth continued on to Asheville and the Biltmore estate. A thank you letter from Elizabeth written the next day says "I can't tell you what a pleasure it was to me to meet a new cousin and one whom I had heard of long ago as living away down south!"10,11,12
