He graduated from Yale University in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, with a bachelor's degree in 1860, and from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, with his law degree in 1863. He was admitted to the bar later that year, and began practicing as a member of the firm Towle and Owen.1
His law carrer was interrupted in the spring of 1864 when he enlisted as a first lieutenant in Co. C of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery. After a month he was appointed aide-de-camp to Maj. Gen. Robert Taylor. He was at the Battles of Spotsylvania in May 1864, and Cold Harbor in June 1864 where he was severely wounded, eventually leading to his discharge. He was brevetted as a captain for his actions at Spotsylvania, then to major for gallantry at Cold Harbor. After his discharge he spent a summer in Europe, then resumed his law practice in Hartford.1
He was one of the original members of the Hartford City Council3, and in 1882 served in the Connecticut state legislature, chairing three committees. He was literary editor of the Hartford Courant for 17 years, wrote numerous articles, editorials, and book reviews for various publications, and was the author of The Justice of the Mexican War, published in 1908.1 He was also a strong supporter of the Salvation Army, and served as vice-president of the Connecticut Humane Society.3
