INDEX
Created by Sparrowhawk 1.0 (4/17/1996) on Tue Apr 27 22:29:19 1999
[End of quote from Sparrowhawk.]
Of course, there is much riding on these connections if they can be proved, not least of which is the connection to the ancient Throckmorton family (a reunion is happening this August at the Coughton Court in Alcester, as it happens; and I have a couple of press releases about it if interested). Also, this would confirm the connection with pilgrims arriving at Plymouth, both Robert Hicks, and the Winslows: Edw. and a brother on the Mayflower, 1620; R. Hicks on the Fortune, 1621; Margaret (Winslow?) Hicks on the Anne, 1623 with four children by Robert - but not including the Margaret who married Edw. Griswold and is buried at Clinton, CT.
This omission of the younger Margaret does not mean she did not exist, nor that she was not the child of Robert and Margaret Hicks. But in the recently published "The Greswold Family - 12 Generations In England" there is the following: [pg. 54] "[Edward12 Griswold] married (1) Margaret [ - ? - ] *lxxvii about 1628 in England. She was born about 1609. Margaret died 23 Aug 1670 in Killingworth, Middlesex, Connecticutt, and was buried in the cemetery behind the Congregational Church in Killingworth (now Clinton), Middlesex, Connecticut. Her stone being the oldest marked, "M.G., 1670." [note *lxxvii on page 54:] "New England Genealogy, Vol.1, p.250, cites her surname as HICKS, but the Robert Hicks family was already in Plymouth as of 1621. Records indicate Margaret and Edward were married in England after this date."
[End of quotes from "The Greswold Family.]
Two things I would point out. First, the footnote argues, as it were, that Margaret Hicks, if born in 1609, should have been with Robert and Margaret, his wife (Winslow?), and the four children she brought with her to Plymouth, no later than 1623. As per Savage's Genealogical Dictionary, which has much to say about Edw. Griswold, Edw. and Margaret (the alleged dau. of Robt. and Marg. Hicks) married in England at a date consistent with Sparrowhawk's 3 Oct 1630. They arrived with children in Windsor, Connecticut about 17 Aug 1639. I don't see that this is irreconcilable. In my research, I've encountered many instances of reports that certain children who were promised were to receive as dowries what they might have received elsewise as an inheritance. You see, neither of the wills of Robert or Margaret Hicks mentions a dau. Margaret as a beneficiary. On the other hand, not all of the children we know were Robert and Maragret's were mentioned in their wills, for whatever reasons.
The second point, that Margaret and possibly other alleged children of Robt. and Marg. Hicks were left in England and raises doubts about their relations to the Hicks is not above refute, either. After all, the younger Margaret and Edw. Griswold did arrive in Windsor later; and we should remember that Robert's trip pre-dated his wife's. Obviously, the case cannot be made that the entire Hicks family made only a single trip and that the entire family was included.
A last point I will make refers to the reference in the New England Genealogy itself, mentioned in the footnote. If there is contemporaneous information that Edwrad Griswold's wife was Margaret Hicks, then a certain burden of proof attaches to one who disputes the surname. (How great a degree of rebutting proof is required is arguable, of course, depending in part on how authentic and accurate it can be surmised that the contemporaneous citation is. It is not for me to judge that aspect.)
I believe, at this point, that the contemporaneous reference to Margaret Hicks as Edward Griswold's wife is of value on its face, and that there were probably no others likely to be that Margaret Hicks but for a daughter of Robert and Margaret Hicks who were pilgrims at Plymouth.
We are unlikely to know for sure, but a certain preponderance of the evidence does support the entries shown by Sparrowhawk to my mind. If the meagre amount of supporting evidence is dashed by a new bit of evidence, then the tables will probably turn. But, for now, I would go with the likelihood that Sparrowhawk's entries are correct, while keeping an open mind about it. If only we knew more about the Griswolds and Hicks in England at that time.
Do you have more information or a more commanding line of argument? This is a fascinating crossroad, if nothing else! - [S29] Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #4280, Date of Import: 16 Apr 1996.

He Abel resided for some years at Poquonock in Windwor, Connecticut, and his first six children are recoreded there (Stiles, 2:829). Undoubtedly he was the Corporal Abel Wright who served from Woindsor in Captain Griswold's Company, Colonel Belden's Regiment, General Wolcott's Brigade, at Peekskill, New Yor, March to June 1777, and was amember of the 8th Company, First Regiment of Militia, 29 May 1779, at Windsor (Stiles, 1:374). However, efforts to find pension records for him under Connecticut and Massachusetts have not succeeded.
His sixth child was born in Wiondsor in 1781; but Abel settled in Ludlow, Massachusetts, by 1785 because on 1 March of that year he was chosen a surveyor of highways at the town meeting (LTR 1: 421). The census of 1790 lists him at Ludlow with two males 16 and over, two males under 16, and three females.
Abel Wright of Ludlow, yeoman, made his last will and testament on 18 February 1832, bequesthing to his beloved wife, Isabel Wright "all the Household furniture of every name and nature which she brought with her when she came to live with me also four cattle namely two cows and two yearling heifers." On 8 May 1832 Zerah Fuller, friend of Abel Wright (actually his grand-daughter's husband) petitioned that Abel be given a guardian because he was incompetent by reason of age and infirmity. Joseph Miller 2d served as guardian, and later, Dr. Washington B. Alden. (Hampden Co. PR, #12414).
The monument of Isabel, wife of Abel Wright, stands in the small cemetery beside the church in Ludlow Center. There is space for several unmarked graves on either side of it.1 He appeared on the census of 1790 at Ludlow, Hampshire, Massachusetts, USA; Wright, Abel

Stutley Scranton & Dorcas Hull, Sept. 13, 1759. - [S9] Rev. Erastus Scranton, A genealogical register of the descendants of John Scranton of Guilford, Conn., who died in the year 1671, Descendants of John Scranton 1855 gives place of death as Brighton, OH. The citation for either the date or place of death cannot be correct, however. If Stukely d. in 1788, Stephen was only 18 years old. According to the same book, Stephen was still in Mass when his younger children were born in 1791 and 1793 (Eunice, Joel). Pioneer Families of Cleveland states Joel first came to Cleveland in 1817, and apparently, his father followed him. This would make it impossible for Stutely to have died at the home of his son, Stephen in 1788.
