1819

SCRANTON
Scranton Avenue is one of the few city streets named after pioneers that has escaped the vandalism of the council that changed nomenclature into numbers.

Stephen Scranton of Ludlow, Mass., married Asenath Wright, daughter of Abel and Joshua Wright of New London, Conn. The couple had a family of eight children, the older of whom were born in Ludlow and Belcherstown, and the youngest, twin-daughters, Cornelia and Harriet, were born in 1817 near Cooperstown, N. Y.

Stephen Scranton was a skillful worker in steel and iron. He was a man of unusual ability with an inventive turn of mind. He built works in Otsego Co., N. Y., for the manufacture of cut nails, the first one of its kind in the state. He possessed rare energy, and had he lived in this later day, would have been known as a "captain of industry" from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

But misfortune overtook him. His works were swept out of existence by fire again and again. The last time they burned down, he gave up the struggle, and with his family removed west, settling in Brighton, Lorain County.

Eunice Scranton, the oldest child of the family, married Rev. Steven V. Taylor, LL. D., President of Madison University, N. Y.

Abel Scranton died of consumption in Cleveland in 1828 at the age of 20.

Joel Scranton, the second child of Stephen and Ascenath Scranton, was born in Belcherstown in 1793. His father's continued misfortunes early made it imperative for Joel to strike out for himself. He had typical Yankee shrewdness to a degree, attributes more suited to mercantile pursuits than the one with which his boyhood had been familiar.

He was 26 years old when he came to Cleveland in 1819, on a little schooner laden with leather. He rented a small store at the foot of Superior Street, and in it stored his cargo. He soon disposed of it, for it was a commodity much in demand. Of this he had assured himself on a former visit, and reconnoiter. To the sale of leather he added that of dry-goods and groceries, and within a few years was doing a business that was steady in yearly growth.

He bought a farm of many acres lying between the river and the amphitheater of hills east and south of it, and since known as "Scranton Flats." Here he built a commodious brick dwelling, in which he lived and died. Years ago, some one with a facile pen pictured, most alluringly:

"The old home and orchard at the foot of the hill, the boat swinging by a chain to a ring in its nose at the shore, the horses and kine pasturing upon the green meadows of the Cuyahoga, the woods that crowned the heights, the humble dwellings struggling up the bluffs as if trying to scale them."

"The flocks of cheep grazing in the pasture have been succeeded by the white fleeces of the busy steam, and the rasp of scythes by the roar of a thousand wheels."

Mr. Scranton sometimes complained whimsically that his big farm and other extensive holdings kept him "land poor." Taxes and improvements yearly growing heavier and currency scarcer.

A Mr. Averill living in the east was his partner in real-estate holdings. "Scranton & Averill," as the firm was known, ceased at Mr. Scranton's death. Mr. Averill came on to Cleveland occasionally, but took no active part in the business. A son and three daughters inherited the latter's interest in the firm, and until very recently, if not yet, the heirs have drawn yearly upon the Cleveland estate.

In the office of T. H. and Edward Bushnell, Society for Savings Building, hangs a letter written by Joel Scranton to Mr. Averill in those early days of land investment.

Mr. Scranton was very unconventional, independent, and democratic. He had a keen sense of humor, and any one who could inveigle him into reminiscence was certain of a rare treat.

In June, 1829, by Rev. Stephen Peet, he was married to Miss Irene P. Hickox. She was the daughter of David and Phebe Post Hickox, who settled in Clinton, N. Y., a college town, in order to give their children
educational advantages. The family consisted of a son, Jesse Hickox, and several daughters.

David Hickox removed to Kinsman, Trumbull County, Ohio, and introduced into that locality the culture of silkworms which was attracting much attention in the east. He brought with him to Ohio cuttings of mulberry which he grafted upon native stock.

David Hickox served three years in the War of the American Revolution. He enlisted March, 1777, and was discharged June, 1780.

Irene Hickox finished her education at Mrs. Pierce's famous seminary in Litchfield, Conn., after which with Mrs. Lewis and an older sister, she started a school for young ladies at Warren, Ohio. A third sister looked after the household needs of the establishment while the others taught.

This venture was not a financial success however, and the sisters divided forces. Irene came to Cleveland and opened a select school in a dwelling on Superior Street below the present site of the American House. But Joel Scranton had other plans for Miss Irene, which he finally persuaded her to accept, and she dismissed her classes to become the mistress of his heart and home. There have been from time to time many beautiful tributes paid to Mrs. Scranton by those who knew her as a gentle, lovely girl, and as a cultured Christian woman whose society and friendship were sought and treasured alike by rich and poor.

She had a family of five children, four of whom she laid away one by one in Woodland Cemetery, and where she rests beside them.

Jenney (???), an adopted daughter,

Mrs. Mary Scranton, widow of the late William Bradford, has been long the sole survivor of her father's family. She lost her only child in infancy, but her home has never been a childless one. In it has dwelt perpetual youth through the presence there of one after another to whom she has been a mother. Her sympathy for the widow and the fatherless, and the homeless, has been acute and tender, and under many circumstances Mrs. Bradford has stood between the unfortunate and bitter, physical suffering. No one will ever learn of it through her.

She has been an active worker in the Old Trinity for many years. She founded the home on Prospect Street, giving to it personal service as well as financial support.

Mrs. Mary Bradford is one of the board of managers of the Women's department of the Cleveland Centennial Commission of 1896, under whose auspices this historical and genealogical work is being prepared and published. For several years she has maintained at her home on Euclid Ave. the annual meeting of the board.

Mrs. Bradford's cousin and adopted daughter, Ella Bradford, married Rt. Rev. William Montgomery Brown, Bishop of Arkansas.3 He appeared on the census of 4 August 1800 at Burlington, Otsego, New York, USA; Edmeston was included as part of Burlington until 1808, so this census entry may be for the same location as subsequent ones listed for Edmeston.

Cornelius B. Gould

M, b. 3 September 1826, d. 26 May 1897
Cornelius B. Gould was born before 3 September 1826 at Turin, Lewis, New York, USA.1 He was christened on 3 September 1826 at First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, Otsego, New York, USA.2 He was the son of Cornelius Gould. Cornelius B. Gould married Mary Adaline Scranton, daughter of Lyman Scranton and Matilda Marks, on 2 June 1852. Cornelius B. Gould died on 26 May 1897 at Emporium, Cameron, New York, USA, at age 70.3,4
     C. B. GOULD, Emporium, editor of the Cameron County Press, a newspaper in the best sense of the word, was born in Cherry Valley, N. Y., July 24, 1826, the youngest in the family of nine children of Cornelius and Mary (Tenant) Gould, who were natives of Otsego county, N. Y., and of English and German origin, respectively. The subject of our sketch, after attending the common schools in his native county, went to the city of Utica, and there learned the trade of printer. Here he worked as a compositor until 1848, when he moved to DeRuyter, N. Y., and there began the publication of the Central New Yorker. Subsequently he went to Homer, same State, and engaged as publisher of the Homer Whig. Binghamton, N. Y., was next the scene of his labors, and while there he acted as reporter for and business manager of The Republican until the year 1866, when he left for Emporium, Penn., and here established the Cameron County Press, as shown in the general chapter on the press. In politics Mr. Gould is an ardent Republican, taking an active interest in the management of the party in his county, and has a wide acquaintance throughout the State with public men of all parties. In national politics he always had the good-will and, confidence of Grant, Conklin, Logan, Simon Cameron and other public men, having held the position of special agent of the post-office department under President Grant. When he ties to a man, politically, he stays by him; he is a hard fighter in political campaigns, and has assisted in elevating many men to prominent positions, both State and national. In social life Mr. Gould is very pleasant and jovial, and has always labored for the best advancement of society, and the upbuilding of Emporium and Cameron county; and too much credit cannot be given him for the advancement of the county seat of Cameron. Always on the lookout for some plan to promote the interests of Emporium, he strongly advocated and assisted most effectually in securing the location of the extensive furnace works at Emporium, also the Mankey Furniture Company, and battled for years for the excellent water system now in operation. He is a zealous guardian of justice, as evidenced by his efforts to bring the murderer of Drum to the bar. To him is largely due the arrest of the alleged criminal, for, from the day of finding the body of the murdered man to the close of the trial, he left nothing undone toward fixing the guilt where it belonged--his training in the postal service fitting him well for such a duty to the community. In his declining years Mr. Gould has the good-will of all, and, as a measure of this good-will, was commissioned postmaster of Emporium in 1889. He was married at Utica, N. Y., to Miss Mary A., daughter of Lyman Scranton, a native of Otsego county, then Empire State. Mr. and Mrs. Gould have four children: Ella, wife of H. H. Mullin (clerk of the county commissioners); A. D. Gould, an editor, residing at Eldred, Penn; Jennie and Mary. The family are all members of the English Protestant Episcopal Church and of the Sunday-school, of which Mr. Gould was for many years superintendent.5 He lived in February 1866 at Emporium, Cameron, Pennsylvania, USA; The PRESS- the story of the the establishment of this excellent Journal was told by the owner, C.B. Gould, in 1888: " in 1866, an association of gentleman, residents of the county, purchased the printing material of the defunct CITIZEN, with a view of establishing a Republican paper and sent to us, then in Binghamton, NY, to come in and published it. We arrived here at the last day of February, 1866, and a more desolate looking place, or one more uninviting to embark in the enterprise of establishing a newspaper, could rarely be found. The only view that met our eye, on stepping from the cars was the towering mountains, woods, and stumps, but the few scattering houses including the Biddie House, then kept by J. L. Cook. Our first impulse was to take the return train, then due, for New York State, and not show ourself to the committee that we felt had imposed upon us, but just then Frank McCollum, who had preceded us here, and was engaged to work in the printing office, put in his appearance and informed us that James G. Clark (an old acquaintance from Utica) was to give a concert in the court house that evening, and desired to see us. After supper at the Biddie House, we were piloted to the courthouse meandering between stumps (sidewalks were a luxury unknown), and through mud we imagine to be about 3 ft. deep, and at last arrived at the temple of Justice, a thoroughly disgusted individual. To our surprise we found a large audience of intelligent, fashionably dressed men and women, and a better class of people we never met. But where did they come from? Was a query we could not answer. There were but a few dilapidated dwellings to be seen, but woods and stumps, and stumps and woods everywhere. Did these people live in hollow trees or behind stumps? Where else could they live? We did not then know that the woods were full of the best kind of people, engaged in lumbering, living in their own the lumber camps, a wealthy, prosperous class, and many of them educated and refined. After the concert, were taken through the audience in introduced to the people, during much as a new minister would be exhibited to his flock. We then made the acquaintance of many who had been our most valued friends these years. Some of them still reside here, a few have made the residence and other places, in many of ceased from labors and gone to their eternal rest. The next morning after our arrival in Emporium, we went to the printing office, then in the old Gibson House, at the lower end of the borough, and found the sorry looking concern. It was a hand press, some newspaper type, and very little material for job work. The forms of the citizen had been left without washing, and having been in that condition for nearly a year, printers can readily understand the labor required to clean the type and get ready for use. The office was in terrible condition, and almost a complete mass of " pi ". However, we want to work, and in about 10 days but the office in good shape, and issued the first number of the press. The paper was of a 6 column folio just half the present size, set in long primer, but a creditable looking sheet, in the Enterprise proved a financial success from the start. Was then the only paper published on the line of the P & E Railroad, between Lock Haven and Warren, and our business increased so rapidly that we were compelled, in a few weeks, to put it in the establishment a Gordon job press and add-largely to do our jobbing facilities. The business steadily increase, and the press had been enlarged to and 8 column paper, the establishment was complete in every department, when, in November 18th 77, it was completely destroyed by fire without a dollar of insurance; the hard earnings of 11 years went up in flames and smoke, and we were compelled to start at the bottom round again; and now, after 11 years more of toil, and many discouragements, we have a better office, one of the most complete newspaper and job establishments in northern Pennsylvania; a large and rapidly growing business, a and brighter prospects for the future. H. H. Mullen is the indefatigable assistant editor, and to him particularly the readers of the press are indebted for the extent and interesting character of the local pages.6
