  • Birth*: Sir Alexander de Seton was born circa 1300 in Scotland.1,4
  • Biography*: Sir Alexander Seton, also known as Alexander de Seton (fl. 1311–1340) was the Governor (sometimes referred to as the Keeper or the Captain) of Berwick.

    Life
Alexander Seton took part in Edward Bruce's 1315 campaign in Ireland. He signed the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320 asserting the independence of Scotland.

    Berwick-upon-Tweed
In 1327 he was appointed keeper of Berwick.

In March 1333 Edward Balliol, son and heir of King John Balliol, and Henry Beaumont, 4th Earl of Buchan, along with their supporters and those of the late John Comyn invaded Scotland with the tacit support of Edward III of England. The army advanced quickly towards Berwick, which was placed under siege.

Alexander Seton held command of the town, while Patrick de Dunbar, Earl of March was entrusted with the defence of the castle. After a long siege, an agreement to surrender Berwick within a certain time unless it has been relieved was obtained. Alexander's son, Thomas Seton, was given as a hostage.

A small party of Scots led by Sir William Keith managed with some difficulty to make their way across the ruins of the old bridge to the northern bank of the Tweed. Keith and some of his men were able to force their way through to the town. Guardian of the Realm Archibald Douglas, who had crossed the Border into England in order to draw Edward, viewed this as a technical relief and sent messages to Edward calling on him to depart.

King Edward III of England viewed it differently, and as the town had not surrendered by the agreed date, saw this as a breech of the agreement and hanged Thomas Seton before the gates of the town. Another treaty was agreed to so as to protect the other hostages. Berwick was eventually surrendered after the defeat of the Scots at the Battle of Halidon Hill on 19 July 1333.

Alexander was present in Edward Balliol's parliament on 10 February 1334 and witnessed the cession of Berwick to the English.

    Marriage and issue
He married Christian Cheyne, daughter of Francis Cheyne of Straloch; they had issue:
Thomas, executed at Berwick in 1333.
William, died July 1333 during siege Berwick.
Margaret, married Alan de Wyntoun, had issue.
Alexander, killed at Kinghorn in 1332.4

  • Birth*: Sir John Graham was born circa 1315 in Scotland.1
  • Marriage*: He married Mary Stewart Countess of Menteith, daughter of Alan Stewart 7th Earl of Menteith and Marjory (?), before 1334 in Scotland.1
  • Biography*: John Graham, Earl of Menteith (d. 28 Feb 1347) was a Scottish nobleman. Graham became Earl of Menteith by courtesy of his wife, Mary Menteith, Countess of Menteith in her own right, daughter of Alan Menteith, 7th Earl of Menteith.

    Life
John was possibly the son of Patrick de Graham and Annabella, widow of John of Restalrig, the daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn. However, this parentage does not fit very well with the chronology as Patrick and Annabella were married in the 1250s and John received papal dispensation for his marriage to Mary in 1334.

He accompanied David II in his invasion of England in 1346. He was present at the battle of Neville's Cross and, when the archers were almost within bowshot, earnestly urged the King to send a body of cavalry to charge them in flank. His advice was unhappily disregarded and when the archers were about to direct their deadly volleys on the serried ranks of the Scottish spearmen, the Earl exclaimed, 'Give me but a hundred horse and I engage to disperse them all; so shall we be able to fight more securely.'

His appeal was, however, unheeded and hastily leaping upon his horse, and followed only by his own retainers, he rushed upon the advancing bowmen but his gallant attack was not supported.

His horse was killed under him and after bravely, but vainly, striving to arrest the advance of the enemy, he was compelled to retire to the main body of the Scottish army. After a stout battle, which lasted for three hours, the Earl was taken prisoner, along with his sovereign, and was imprisoned in the Tower of London.

By the direct orders of the English King, Edward III, he was tried and condemned as a traitor, on the plea that he had at one time sworn fealty to the English King, and was drawn, hanged, beheaded and quartered.

    Marriage and issue
By his wife the countess of Menteith, Graham had issue:

    Margaret Graham, Countess of Menteith.2

Duncan (?) 8th Earl of Lennox1

By clicking on the each instance (i.e. Ancestry of Archibald MacFarlane (#5)) each line of descent will be shown.

  • Birth*: Duncan (?) 8th Earl of Lennox was born circa 1345 in Scotland.3
  • Marriage*: He married Helen Campbell, daughter of Sir Colin "longanlach" Campbell of Lochawe, 3rd Baron, before 1373 in Scotland.4
  • Biography*: Donnchadh of Lennox was the Mormaer of Lennox, 1385-1425. He was a son of Baltar mac Amlaimh and Margaret, daughter of Domhnall, Earl of Lennox.

When Domhnall of Lennox died in 1365, Donnchadh's mother Margaret became ruler of Lennox. It had been Domhnall's intention that the marriage would eventually allow the succession of a son, i.e. Donnchadh, but it is probable that Baltar intended to rule in his turn. It is not known how relations deteriorated, but it seems that Donnchadh got impatient. In the summer of 1384, King Robert II issued two charters formally conferring the Mormaerdom on Baltar. However, a year later he and his wife Margaret resigned the Mormaerdom over to their eldest son Donnchadh, and hence Donnchadh became ruler. However, in 1388, Baltar and Margaret were handed custody of the Mormaerdom for the remainder of their lives, with Donnchadh retaining the title. Donnchadh was confined to a stronghold in Loch Lomond, Inchmurrin castle.

Donnchadh was forced to form strong ties with the great Robert Stewart, who was the bastard son of King Robert II, and who ruled much of Scotland. In 1392, Donnchadh met Robert at Inchmurrin and agreed to marry his daughter Isabella to Robert's son, Muiredach if Robert could secure him the Mormaerdom. As Domhnall was heirless, the deal ensured that the Mormaerdom would pass to the Stewarts upon Donnchadh's death. It took much of the 1390s, but nevertheless Robert managed to secure his part of the bargain.

Donnchadh hence became a part of the Albany Stewart nexus which controlled much of Scotland and challenged the crown's authority. Donnchadh proved to have some longevity, and eventually Muiredach's second son Walter became the designated heir. These Stewart ties led to Donnchadh's downfall. In 1425, the men of Lennox revolted against King James I, who was conducting a purge of the Albany Stewarts. Both Donnchadh and Walter were executed as a result.

He was the last male ruler of his line.

    Marriage and issue
During the life of his father Baltar, Donnchadh forged ties with his Argyll neighbours, and married Helen, the daughter of Archibald Campbell of Lochawe. Countess Helen was widow of a John of the Isles, son of John of Islay.
By Helen of the Isles, Lennox had issue:
Isabella, Countess of Lennox - married Murdach Stewart, Earl of Fife
Elizabeth - married John Stewart of Darnley, Lord of Aubigny, Concressault and Count of Évreux.

Earl Donnchadh also had four natural sons:
    Malcolm
    Thomas
    Donald
    William.2

He was the great grandson of Amlaibh, the grandson of Mormaer Ailín II through the male line. He was the chief of a kin-group tracing its origins to the settlement which followed the death of Ailín II, where the ten brothers of Mormaer Maol Domhnaich were compensated with lands.

Baltar and his kin achieved the Mormaerdom because he was allowed to marry the daughter of Mormaer Domhnall, Margaret. When Domhnall died in 1365, Margaret succeeded with Baltar as de facto ruler. It had been Domhnall's intention that the marriage would eventually allow the succession of a grandson, but it seems that Baltar was intended to rule in his turn. Indeed Baltar and Margaret had a son, Donnchad, who was probably a young man by the time Baltar and Margaret succeeded. We do not know how relations deteriorated, but it seems that Donnchadh got impatient.

In the summer of 1384, King Robert II issued two charters formally conferring the Mormaerdom on Baltar. However, a year later he and his wife Margaret resigned the Mormaerdom over to their eldest son Donnchadh. Brown (p. 215) attributes this change as a policy change of the monarchy triggered by the increased influence of John of Carrick, the future king Robert III.

However, in 1388, Baltar and Margaret were handed custody of the Mormaerdom for the remainder of their lives, with Donnchadh retaining the title. Donnchadh was confined to a stronghold in Loch Lomond, Inchmurrin castle.3,2

  • Birth*: Domhnall (?) of Lennox was born circa 1300 in Scotland.1
  • Death*: He died in 1365 in Scotland.1
  • Biography*: Mormaer Domhnall of Lennox ruled Lennox in the years 1333–1365.

Domhnall's reign is noted for its tension with the monarchy. King David II irritated Domhnall by residing at Dumbarton on at least twelve occasions between 1341 and 1346. Domhnall was probably one of the happier Scottish magnates when King David and his agent, Malcolm Fleming, Sheriff of Dumbarton, were captured by the English at the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1346.

Domhnall was also faced with the challenge of fending off the aggressive Stewart clan. Having no male heirs, Domhnall is credited with saving the Mormaerdom by marrying off his daughter Margaret to his kinsman Baltar mac Amlaimh, the man usually known today as Walter of Faslane. This act kept the Mormaerdom within the Lennox line, and preserved it in the medium term from Stewart takeover.

    Domhnall died in 1365.1'
