She may have been a daughter of Thomas Orton, who in 1688 mentioned his daughter Mary Root when dividing his estate.1 She and her husband Samuel joined the parish church in Westfield, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, in 1680.1

His wife Sarah was named executrix, and she was to receive his house, barn, homestead, and all his moveables for her use while living. After her death, his house and homestead were to go to the church in Westfield. He left additional lands to his brothers Joseph and John and his sister [Sarah] Wright. He also mentions his brother Timothy and his sisters Mary Meacham and Thankful Root.1
