In 1669 John Roote was made a freeman in Westfield, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts.2 He also served as commissary, receiving £14 for his services in 1680.2 He left an estate worth £505.2

He was chosen as a freeman in Westfield, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, in 1680.1 He and his wife Mary joined the parish church in Westfield in 1680.1 He was chosen deacon in 1703.1
His will was apparently contested, and his property ended being equally divided between his surviving brothers and sisters and his adopted son John Davis. A formal agreement signed by them or their attorneys was filed in Northampton, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts.1

He was tall, about 6 feet 6 inches, well built, and very strong. Family tradition says that he was a fast runner, and was outrun only once, by an Indian. He was also a great wrestler.2 He fought in the Indian Wars for about 2 1/2 years. With Major Treat and some friendly Indians from Farmington, he was involved in a fight at Fort Narragansett when the Indian fort was destroyed.2

He moved to Lower Housatonic Twp., Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, sometime between 1726 and 1730, where he was one of the early settlers. This area became the town of Sheffield in 1733.1 His estate was valued at £519.1
