Leonard Hall1

b. about 1728, d. before 2 February 1809
Relationship5th great-grandfather of Charles Edward Towne
ChartsVerda Williamson Ancestors
Leonard Hall was born about 1728.2 He married Johanna Letton, daughter of Caleb Letton and Grace (?), about 1750 in Prince Georges Co., Maryland.1 He died before 2 February 1809, when the inventory of his estate was filed, in Barren Co., Kentucky.3
He served in the militia of Bedford Co., Virginia, during the French and Indian War, and at one point received £1 10s "for conducting Indians."4
On 28 May 1765 he bought 400 acres of land along Elk Creek in Bedford Co., Virginia, from Alexander Parrish for £50.5 In 1771 he served on a jury in Botetourt Co., Virginia.6
For his services during the French and Indian War, he received four land grants in Fayette Co., Kentucky, from the state of Virginia, two of 400 acres each and two of 1000 acres each. He paid £2 for each of the 400-acre grants. The 1000-acre grants were based on Treasury Warrants assigned to him by Isaac Hoag and Benjamin Barton. One of the 1000-acre parcels was surveyed for him by Daniel Boone on 28 July 1783. Also listed on the survey are Leonard Hall's sons Leonard Hall Jr., as a chain man, and Caleb Hall, as land marker, implying that they knew the frontiersman Daniel Boone. This particular parcel was based on Treasury Warrent 338, dated 27 June 1780, and was granted to Leonard Hall on 22 March 1785. It laid along the north fork of the Elkhorn River, three miles northwest of Daniel Boone's land. He apparently never lived there, however.7
Instead, he moved to Barren Co., Kentucky, 150 miles to the southwest of Fayette Co. on the Tennessee border. He perhaps was related to a judge there named John Hall.8 On 27 December 1790 he gave to his son Caleb his power of attorney to take care of all his land transactions in Kentucky.9
He died intestate, and the settlement of his estate caused a great deal of dissension among his heirs. His son Mahlon and son-in-law Henry Renick were appointed administrators of the estate, and filed the inventory on 2 February 1809 in Barren Co., Kentucky. The estate was valued at $3606.75 ($2225 of which was the value of eight slaves - two men named Jacob and Squire, four women named Nelly, Phillis, Peggy, and Selia, and two girls named Lucy and Rosey). His widow Joanna received 1/3, and the rest was to be distributed among the heirs.
In February 1812 Caleb Hall and Anderson Harlow, Naomi Hall's husband, filed a complaint with the Barren Co. Circuit Court, claiming that Henry Renick and Mahlon Hall sold the assets of the estate and failed to distribute equal shares to the heirs. After Joanna Hall's death about 1819, another complaint was filed, charging that Henry Renick and Mahlon Hall had illegally appointed themselves administrators of her estate and were again refusing to distribute equal shares to the heirs. The final disposition of the charges is unknown, but it appears that Leonard Hall's heirs bought the land from his estate in 1830.10

Caleb Letton1

Relationship6th great-grandfather of Charles Edward Towne
ChartsVerda Williamson Ancestors
     Caleb Letton married Grace (?).1
He lived at a place called Autra, just below Rockville, Prince Georges Co., Maryland, where he was a planter.2 In 1727 he acquired St. Mary's plantation, which adjoined Autra on the west.2 The Prince Georges Parish records show that he was among the first Church Wardens when the church at Rock Creek was built. He later was among a group designated to start another parish, with the Rock Chapel as the church.2
His will was dated 21 April 1759 in Frederick Co., Maryland. To his wife Grace he left his slaves Old Outry and his wife Sue, Young Outry, and a girl Dinah; a share of the corn, grain, and tobacco crops; his household goods; and half of his plantation, containing 186 acres. After her death her share of the plantation was to go to his son Caleb if he had heirs, otherwise to his son Michael if he had heirs, otherwise to his daughter Grace. The other half of the plantation was to go to his son Michael if he had heirs, otherwise to his son Caleb if he had heirs, otherwise to his daughter Grace. His daughter Grace also received a slave boy named Nace and girl named Sukey. His son John and daughter Johannah were to receive five shillings "and no more." His wife Grace was named executrix.2
