He was a ship captain. On a trip from Georgia to St. Christopher in 1761 his ship was taken over by a French privateer. After 24 hours he negotiated the release of his ship in return for 2300 pieces of eight, but was held captive while his ship and crew were sent to St. Eustatia or St. Christopher for the money. He was taken to a prison at Martinoco, but was eventually released and made his way to St. Christopher.1
He was elected to the General Court six times, and to the Provincial Congress in 1775, 1776, 1777, and 1779. He was also a justice of the peace, and was appointed surveyor and inspector when Salem and Beverly were combined into a single district.1
