He was a silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker in Baltimore, Maryland.6 He is listed in Baltimore in the 1860 census, as a merchant. Living with him were Charlotte Hyde, C. Chamberlain, and an Irish servant, Maria Higgins (20).7 On 12 December 1867 he wrote that he planned on selling his house, leaving Baltimore, and "going to live with Lydia [his sister Lydia (Gould) Weld] after April next."8 He is listed with Lydia's family in West Roxbury, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, in the 1870 census, as a "retired merchant."9

- [S5114] 1860 U.S. Census, James Gould household, unknown county, Maryland. James Gould had a sister Catherine, who married Thomas Hyde in 1829. Their relationship to Charlotte Hyde listed with him in 1860 is unknown, but it's possible that "Charlotte" is actually Catherine. From letters written by James to Elizabeth (Abbot) Bowditch, we know that Catherine was not living with James when his wife Eliza died on 10 March 1859, but she was with him on 3 April 1859. His letter of 14 February 1866 says that "In 1861 I sent Kate north," but she was apparently back living with him in 1866 and 1867.
