He was "President of the Beverly Bank and of Essex Bridge."4 He and his first wife Anna had the following known children, all born in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts: William (b 22 March 1780), Fanny (b 2 March 1782, d 18 February 1859), Nathan (b 18 December 1785, d 14 July 1826), Sarah (b 30 August 1789).2 He and his second wife Ruth had the following known children, all born in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts: Nancy (b 10 September 1796), Andrew Thorndike (b 1 June 1798), Elizabeth (b 23 March 1800), John (b 8 April 1802), Edward (b October 1805, d February 1806), Ellen (b 11 November 1806, d 29 June 1884).2

He was commander of the First Beverly Co., which marched to Concord, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, in the alarm of 19 April 1775. He participated in many of the principal battles during the Revolution, and was also a member of the Committee of Correspondence and Safety.1 He was the first Representative from Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts, to the General Court, and held that position for several years, including 1785-1790.1
