He may have worked as a printer's devil (i.e., apprentice) for Edward Winslow and William Brewster from about 1618 to September 1619 in Leiden, Holland.1 He came to New England on the Mayflower in 1620 as a servant to Edward Winslow.1 He received one acre when the settlers first divided their land into private plots in 16231, and he and his wife Mary, along with their son Zakariah, were listed as residents when the division of cattle was made on 22 May 1627.1 He was listed as a freeman in Plymouth, New Plymouth Colony, in 1632/33.1
He and Mary apparently moved to Duxbury, New Plymouth Colony, sometime before 1639, as he was named there in freeman lists of 1639, 1658, and 1670.1 He served as Deputy from Duxbury to the Plymouth Colony General Court several times from 1642 to 1654, on petit and grand juries between 1642/43 and 1662/63, and on various committees from 1640 to 1658.1
He also owned land in Dartmouth, New Plymouth Colony, which he gave to his sons Nathaniel and George on 22 January 1658 and 17 July 1668, without specifying a division of the property between them.1 With his wife Mary's consent, on 23 July 1668 he gave his daughter Elizabeth's husband Francis Walker a half share of his land in "Namassakett" (Middleboro)2, and gave additional land to Elizabeth on 12 March 1668/69.1 On 26 January 1668/69 he gave a half share of land to his daughter Patience and her husband John Haskall.1
His will was dated 11 August 1677, with a codicil dated 20 September 1677. In it he noted the land gifts previously made to his sons Nathaniel and George, and daughters Elizabeth and Patience. He also named his daughters Susanna and Mary. His oldest son John was named executor, and was to receive the remainder of his housing and land. The codicil, however, stated that if John "disturbed" his daughter Patience, then she was to be the executor and receive his house and land in Duxbury.1

On 30 December 1674 he received land in Middleboro, New Plymouth Colony, from his father-in-law Moses Simmons, in consideration of his marriage to Moses's daughter Rebecca.2 He deeded 40 acres of land in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, to his son Aaron on 31 July 16953, and additional land to his son John on 24 July 16972, to his sons Joseph, Josiah, and Joshua on 30 June 17012, and to his son James on 27 December 1703.2
He died intestate, and his widow Esther was appointed administrator of his estate on 14 November 1707. His daughters Rebecca and Rachel, and the heirs of his deceased daughter Sarah, asked that the real estate be divided among them, since their brothers had already received portions of their father's land, and the daughters had only received one cow. The estate was settled on 6 March 1707/08.2

His will was dated 29 March 1697 and proved on 30 June 1704. It mentions his wife Deborah, sons William, John, and Nathan, daughters Deborah, Mary, Lydia, and Sarah. His wife Deborah and son William were named executors. On 22 June 1704 ("22 day of ye 4th month") his widow Deborah repudiated the will. His granddaughter Mary Coggeshall, daughter of his son George, contested the will, and in 1719 received a share representing her father's rights to part of the estate.2

This source notes that the only evidence for their marriage is a diary by Samuel West, a great grandson of Francis West, that says Francis married a daughter of George Soule, and names his children. The last three children are apparently consistent with those recorded in Rhode Island vital records for North Kingstown. Y-DNA tests on male descendants also supports their marriage.

On 3 March 1662/63 she and Nathaniel Church were fined for fornication. She later sued Nathaniel for not marrying her, and received a partial judgment in October 1663. Based on this suit and judgment, she probably had a child from this union, born in 1663, who probably died young.2 She was again charged with fornication on 2 July 1667, but the man involved is unknown.2

On 26 March 1676, during King Philip's War, he was one of about 60 men in Capt. Michael Pierce's company, along with about 20 Indian allies, who were led into an ambush by the Narragansett Indians along the Blackstone River in what is now Central Falls, Rhode Island. Nearly all of the company were killed, including Benjamin Soule. Tradition says that nine who survived were taken prisoner, marched north about three miles, and executed near a large rock. A monument was later built at the spot, now known as Nine Men's Misery.3,2
