Oliver H. Perry Hendershot1,2

b. about 1858
Oliver H. Perry Hendershot was born about 1858 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio.3 He married first Leonora A. Beam on 18 August 1882 in Niles, Berrien Co., Michigan.3 They were later divorced, probably within a few months. A 20 September 1882 newspaper article says that Leonora had left him, and that "in a moment of girlish glamor [she] had secretly married him," then realized she had made a mistake, and her leaving was part of a plan "for bringing about a divorce."4 He married second Katherine Estella Mosher, daughter of Thomas Anthony Mosher and Elizabeth Brown, on 24 June 1886 in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio.1 Oliver filed for divorce in April 1892 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., saying she left him on 8 February 1888, has been "wilfully absent and grossly neglectful," and was then in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. He willingly gave up custody of their daughter Florence.5 He married third Jennie Squire on 22 May 1893 in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio.6
He moved to Mishawaka, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, on 4 December 18807, where he worked in a butcher shop.8
In 1881 he was involved in an incident in Mishawaka that led to the death of Albert Wesley Hopkins. Hopkins had "long been an eyesore" in Mishawaka, and in the 1860s ("during the war enlistments") he was imprisoned after he and another man had robbed and beaten a man who had enlisted.9,10
On Sunday 13 March 1881 Hopkins approached two young girls who were intending to buy something in a local drug store, but the store was closed. He reportedly told them he would help find a store, but then took off with the money, 15 cents. Several men hunted for him and retrieved the money, ended up beating him, and he died at his mother's house three days later, on 16 March.9,11 The coroner found that he died from inflammation of the bladder and bowels, possibly hastened by the beating.12 Four men were arrested, including Perry Hendershot and Isaac Williams, the father of one of the girls. Several others fled town, including Herbert Chapin and Theodore Needham.9
On 24 March Hendershot, Williams, Chapin, and Needham were indicted for involuntary manslaughter.13 They were tried separately, with Hendershot's trial first, starting on 4 April. Testimony showed that Hendershot obtained a rope that was put around Hopkins, and helped lead him to a bridge over a race (i.e., water channel) where they threatened to "duck him." After some period of time he was released when he agreed to leave town. Later, however, he was found by the crowd and again beaten.
A couple witnesses testified that they saw Hendershot kick Hopkins from behind, and hit him in the head. Others said that he never struck Hopkins. Several said that he attempted to protect Hopkins from being beaten further. At one point Hopkins was running ahead of the crowd, and Hendershot ran in front and stopped him. A witness heard Hendershot say he did that to keep him from going to his sister's, because "he was afraid the crowd would follow and kill him." One of Hopkins's doctors testified that Hopkins later said "if it had not been for Hendershot they would have killed him." Hendershot helped lead Hopkins to the railroad tracks, where he headed west, then after dark made his way to his mother's house.8,14,15,7
The trial lasted five days, ending on 9 April. Hendershot was found guilty, and the jury recommended the minimum sentence of two years in prison.16
Chapin and Needham, who had been at large since 17 March, were captured on 9 April.17 Chapin was tried next, starting on 12 April. He was also found guilty, with a recommended sentence of two years.18,19 Needham's trial began on 19 April, and the next day he changed his plea to guilty and was also sentenced to two years.20,21 That same day, 20 April, lawyers for Hendershot and Chapin presented arguments for a new trial. They were denied, and the judge formally sentenced them to two years. Williams then changed his plea from not guilty of involuntary manslaughter, to guilty of assault and battery, and was fined $50 plus costs.21
Friends of Hendershot, Chapin, and Needham petitioned the governor for a pardon, or for a lessening of their sentences, but were denied.22 A year later, on 19 April 1882, all three were pardoned by the governor, and returned to Mishawaka the next day.23

He graduated from St. Paul's School in Garden City, Nassau Co., New York, then enrolled in the Sheffield Scientific School (part of Yale University) in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, as a member of the class of 1892 to study mechanical engineering. He moved to Yale University proper the following year, and graduated in 1893 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy.2
He was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force in March 1917, rose through the ranks, and was promoted to commander on 14 June 1919. He served in the Disbursing Division of Supplies and Accounts until being placed on inactive duty on 6 December 1920.2

His wife was to receive 2/3 of the income from the trust annually, or $10,000, whichever was larger. The remaining 1/3 was to go to his son Edward, as long as he was not married (or remarried) to Eleanor K. Mitchell, his current wife who he was in the process of divorcing.11
