He was a well-to-do clothier and landowner, with his own flock of sheep in Harberton, Devon, England.1
His will was dated 10 July 1617 and proved 19 September 1617. The witnesses were Will Huxham and Thomas Colton. His estate was inventoried on 10 September 1617, and valued at £602 7s 9d. It included cloth and yarn, £102; 93 sheep, £31; 32 lambs, £6; "an estate in certain grounds," £61; "an estate in house, meadow, and garden," £20; and "desperate debts," £140. He left much of his estate to his son Henry, including: land in Harberton Ford called Racheparke, together with three houses apparently being rented out, plus the orchard, nursery, and herb garden; the mansion house on land called Crobers Land, also apparently being rented out, along with the sheep pen, orchard, herb garden, and bakehouse, for his use during his lifetime; and £100. His wife Isett received the use of a room over his shop, £6 13s 4d to be paid yearly from the income from Crobers Land; and sufficient meat, drink, and firewood to support her and an attendent for her. Isett and Henry also received half of the household goods, to be divided equally. His executor (his son John?) was to receive the remaining half. His daughter Raddegan was to receive £60 when she turned 21, and his daughters Allies, Agnes, and Elizabeth were each to receive £40 when they turned 20. He left £5 each to his grandchildren Joseph and Samuel Saunders, 2s each to his brother's and sister's children, 12d each to his godchildren, and 30s to his apprentice Nycholas Hyans. He also left 30s to the poor of the parish of Harberton. The remainder of his estate went to his son John.1

In 1624 Chrispin Saunders was taxed on land he owned in Harberton, Devon, England.1
His will was dated 16 October 1626 and proved 8 December 1626. His wife was named as executor. The overseers were his uncle John Huxham and his uncle's son, also John Huxham, and Thomas Voysey. The witnesses were William Walplate, John Burtt (possibly his wife's brother), John Huxham, and Thomas Voysey. His estate was inventoried on 1 December 1626, and valued at £53 16s 10d. It included a mill to make clean seed wheat, 13s 4d; a sword, musket, and birding piece, 13s 4d; books, 13s 4d; harvested corn, £14; and 2 kine (cows), sheep, pigs, and a "labor beast," £10 10s. He left his three pairs of lumes (looms?) to his three eldest sons, a chest to his son Daniel, and a chest to his daughter Rebecca. He also ordered that £5 each be paid to his sons Joseph and Samuel, which had been left to them by their grandfather Henry Burtt.1

On 2 April 1831 he was issued a land patent by the federal government for 79.25 acres he had purchased in Stark Co., Ohio.9 He sold the northern half of this land on 7 January 1832, to Christian Frager for $10010, and the southern half on 20 July 1833, to Jacob Lenhart for $300.11
On 7 December 1835 he was issued a patent for 160 acres in Hancock Co., Ohio. In that certificate he is referred to as being "of Stark County, Ohio," so it's possible that he moved from Stark Co. to Hancock Co. in 1835 or 1836.12 He sold most of this land (140 acres) on 5 February 1845, to Price Blackford for $120013, and the rest (20 acres) on 1 January 1848, to Jasper F. Davis for $140.14 He and his wife Ann were still living in Hancock Co. in 1850, in Marion Twp., where they were listed in the census with their children Samuel, John, Elizabeth, Jesse, and Jacob, and John's wife Lovinia.15 At some point he purchased additional land in Hancock Co., since on 29 March 1854 he sold another tract, containing 120 acres, to Jacob Grubb for $1900.16
He was living in Sherwood, Branch Co., Michigan, in 1860. The 1860 census lists him in the same house as his sons Samuel and Jacob, along with Samuel's wife "Ann Eliza" and their children Emily A., Anna S., and Roxalana. He was a farmer, with real estate worth $1200 and personal property worth $350.5
His will was dated 29 May 1858 and proved on 18 November 1864. The witnesses were James Rosecrance, Abbott Blanchard, and Isaac D. Beall. His son Samuel and Isaac Beall were named as executors. In the will, he ordered that all of his property be sold, and the proceeds divided evenly between his sons George, Henry, Samuel, John, Jessie, and Jacob, and his daughters Margarett, Mary, and Elisabeth, with one exception. Mary's share, except for $5.00, was to go to her children by her late first husband Jacob Stalchnecker (sic) when they came of age. His estate was appraised by Abbott Blanchard and James Rosecrance, and the inventory was filed 22 December 1864. It gave a value for the estate of $914.82, broken down as follows: notes and a mortgage against Newcomb Wilcox, including interest to 15 December 1864, $738.37; a note against Abbott Blanchard, including interest, $51.45; and cash, $125.00. Among the claims made against the estate were one by his son Samuel for $600, $550 of which was allowed, for expenses incurred while caring for him during the last seven years of his life; one by his son-in-law Jacob Young for $150, $50 of which was allowed, for boarding him at various times, totaling about two years, during the last eight years of his life; and one by W. H. Hofer for $25 for a coffin. The administrator's report, filed by Isaac Beall on 2 October 1866, shows an estate value of $987.79, with claims and expenses of $774.33, leaving $213.46 to be distributed to the heirs. Each of the nine shares ended up being worth $24.03.8

He and his wife Margaret are listed in the census of 1850 in Norton Twp., Summit Co., Ohio, along with their children Sophia A. and William H. Swikert. His occupation is listed as laborer, and he didn't own any real estate. Margaret is listed as unable to read or write.3 About 1852 or 1853 they moved to Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan,6,8, where they are listed in the 1860 census (with the surname "Swaker"), with their son William, age 14. Listed in the same household are Alexander Newton (age 50) and George Newton (age 18). Here his occupation is listed as farmer.9
He and (presumably) his wife Margaret were witnesses to the will of Robert Wason (father of his brother Jesse's wife Amorette), dated 15 August 1868.10
He and Margaret are listed in the 1870 census in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, next to their daughter Sophia and her family. Listed with them is William Swikert, age 7, born in Michigan, but it's pretty clear that this is actually William D. Gibson, who was "as dear to them as a child."4,6 William had lived with them most of his life, after William's father Thomas Gibson died on 10 May 1865, and his mother Margaret died on 28 February 1866. After their deaths, Myron A. Powell was appointed guardian "of the children" on 2 October 1866. However, William's sister Sophia was over 14, and nominated Myron A. Powell as her guardian that same date. On 28 May 1872 William's brother Miles Gibson was living with his uncle George Gibson, and nominated George Gibson as his guardian rather than Myron Powell. On 9 October 1872 William's uncle Charles Gibson petitioned to have George Swikert appointed as William's guardian, and the petition was granted three days later, on 12 October 1872. Charles Gibson was appointed guardian of William's brother Miles and sisters Elnora, Margaret, and Rebecca on 14 February 1873.11
George and Margaret are again listed in Otsego Twp. in the 1880 census, and William Gibson is listed with them as George's cousin.12
On 17 October 1872 he and Margaret sold a small piece of land in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, to George Hadden and Nelson S. Sprague for $90. The land was described as "commencing and beginning at the northeast corner of the west half (1/2) of the northwest quarter of SW 1/4 quarter of Section twenty two (22) thence running south twenty feet thence northwesterly (across?) said above described twenty acres of land to a point twenty feet west of said place of beginning being a triangular piece of land out of the northeast corner of said above described land containing two hundred feet of land more or less."13
On 22 August 1887 he sold 37 1/2 acres of land in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, to his daughter Sophia and her husband Martin Sperry for $1.00 and "my maintenence during life." His wife Margaret died just five days earlier, and is not named in the deed, so it seems likely that he lived with his daughter and son-in-law after this point. The description of the land is lengthy - "The west half of the west half of the southwest (1/4) of Section No. 22 in Town 1 N. of Range 12 west, excepting 4 acres described as follows. Commencing at the N.W. corner of land owned by Wm Monteith in the center of the highway and about the center of said W. (1/2) of S.W. 1/4. Thence west along the center of said highway 18 rods, thence south forty rods, thence east 18 rods, thence N. on the W. line of Monteith land to the place of beginning. Also commencing at a point in the center of the highway from Otsego to Pine Creek on the south side of the Kalamazoo River, where the W. line of said Section (22) crosses the said highway. Thence south on said Section line twenty-nine (29) and 50/100 rods to the 1/4 post, thence due east on the (1/4) line ten (10) and 28/100 rods, thence north parallel with the Section line thirty-two (32) and 19/100 rods to the center of said highway, thence along the center of said highway westerly to the place of beginning."14,15

Her death record gives her age at death as 70 years, 6 months, 12 days, which implies a birth date of 5 February 1817, and her cemetery marker has the same death date, but gives her age as 72 years, 5 months, 17 days, which would make her birth date 28 February 1815. A birth year of 1817 or 1818 is more consistent with her age listed in the 1850-1880 censuses (33, 42, 52, and 63, respectively).

He is listed with his parents in Norton Twp., Summit Co., Ohio, in the 1850 census1, and no doubt came with them to Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, about 1852 or 1853.3,4
During the Civil War he served in Company K, 1st. Michigan Cavalry. He enlisted at Otsego on 24 October 1863 for three years, and was mustered in on 16 November 1863. At the time of his enlistment he gave his age as 18, but the 1850 census indicates he couldn't have been over 17. On 11 June 1864 he was taken prisoner at Trevillian Station, Virginia. He was discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on 16 June 1865.5,1

He and his wife Elizabeth are listed in the censuses of 1850 to 1870 in Middleton Twp., Wood Co., Ohio. In 1850 they are listed, with the spelling "Swygart," with children Emeline Wickham (age 4) and Amanda J. (age 2), both born in Ohio. In 1860 they are listed with the spelling "Swagart," with children Hope Wickman (age 15), and Amanda (age 13), both born in Ohio, and Oliver Fleming (age 14), born in New York. In 1870 they are listed with the spelling "Swigert," with Lucinda Wickham (age 16), and Cepheus and Jane Lake (both 22), all born in Ohio. His occupation is given as farmer in all the censuses.5,7,8
The exact relationship between Elizabeth (Wickham) Swikert and the Wickham children listed with her and her husband Henry in the censuses is unknown. They were probably all nieces of Elizabeth. It seems likely that Emeline and Amanda were sisters, perhaps daughters of a deceased brother of Elizabeth. Given their ages, Emeline and Hope may be the same person (Emeline Hope Wickham, perhaps). Lucinda was clearly a niece (from the 1880 census), but probably a cousin to Emeline and Amanda and not a sister, since she was born about 1854, after Emeline and Amanda were already living with Elizabeth.
Marriage records show that Amanda married Josephus Lake on 13 May 1869, and that Lucinda married Nicholas A. Mccombs on 14 May 1885. The 1870 census listing for Henry and Elizabeth includes Cepheus and Jane Lake living with them, so Amanda J. was actually Amanda Jane Wickham. The Bertha Lake living with Elizabeth in 1880 was their daughter, indicating that Amanda may have died between 1870 and 1880. Interestingly, Bertha (Lake) Vollmar's transcribed death record lists her parents as Cephus Lake and Jane Swager (sic), indicating that Amanda Jane Wickham may have been at least unofficially adopted by Henry and Elizabeth Swikert.5,7,8,9,10,11,12
