     Helen Maria Upton was born "Monday morning, quarter before five o'clock" on 25 September 1843 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,2,3 She and her brother Joseph were both baptized on 31 March 1847 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^4,5 She was married by Gordon M. Bradley, Clergyman, to William Henry Porter, son of Elijah Porter and Rebecca A. Abbott, on 19 June 1867, probably in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^6,2,1,7 She died on 14 March 1868 at age 24 from the effects of childbirth, at her father's house in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^3,1
     After their marriage she and her husband William lived on Ocean St. in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.³

     William Henry Porter was born on 26 March 1836 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^5,3,4,6 He was baptized on 28 August 1836 at the Crombie Street Church in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.² He was married first, by Gordon M. Bradley, Clergyman, to Helen Maria Upton, daughter of Luther Upton and Helen Maria Bowditch, on 19 June 1867, probably in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^4,3,1,7 He married second Ellen Gilman, daughter of Charles Gilman and Ruth Phelps Morse, probably in late 1870 (based on the birth date of their daughter, and the fact that Ellen was listed with her stepmother and the surname McGilman in the 1870 census).^8,9,10 He died in 1873 in Baltimore, Maryland.⁶ He was buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.⁶
     At the time of his first marriage he was the Massachusetts state paymaster^3,4, and was living in Salem.^3,4 After their marriage he and his wife Helen lived on Ocean St. in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.¹¹

     George William Abbot was born on 3 September 1825 in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts.¹ He married first Sarah Morse Bowditch, daughter of Joseph Bowditch and Lucinda Morse (and sister of his sister Elizabeth's husband Joseph Henry Bowditch), on 17 July 1855 at Grace Church in New York, New York.³ He married second Emily Hooper, daughter of Henry Northey Hooper and Priscilla Langdon Harris, on 7 March 1861 in Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.⁴ He died from acute gastritis on 24 June 1861 in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts, at age 35.^5,6 He was buried with his first wife Sarah at Central Cemetery (Sub Division 8, Lot 208) in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁷
     He was a mariner like his father George, first going to sea in 1842 at age 17.^8,9,10 He visited ports all over the world, in the Dutch East Indies, the Netherlands, India, the Philippines, China, Brazil, Australia, and Singapore.^{11,12,13,14,15} On 20 October 1848 he sailed on the Augustine Hind under Capt. Charles Saunders Huntingdon of Salem, headed for Hobart Town, Australia, then on to Canton, China, to be gone about 18 months.¹⁴ In 1850, not long after their return, Capt. Huntington died unexpectedly in Boston, just three days before they were scheduled to go back out to sea, and George was named captain, at age 24.¹⁶ He was away at sea when his first wife Sarah died in childbirth on 14 May 1856.^17,2
     He and Sarah are listed in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts, in the 1855 state census, along with his siblings John, Martha, Ellen, and Frederick. Living with them were servants Julia Corbett (age 21, born in Ireland) and Mariano Mastin (25, born in Manila).⁸ He was again listed in Beverly in the 1860 census, after Sarah's death, along with John, Martha, Ellen, and probably Frederick, and a servant Hannah Corbet (age 25, born in Ireland).^9,18
     His will was dated 4 August 1855 in Beverly, about two weeks after his first marriage. His brother John Edwin Abbot was named executor, and all of the estate was left to him "for the time being," with instructions that all income from the estate was to go to his wife Sarah for as long as she remained a widow. At her remarriage or death, all income was to go to his sisters Martha and Ellen for as long as they remained unmarried. Upon the marriage or death of either of them, all the income was to go to the other for as long as she remained unmarried, unless in the executor's opinion the married one was in need of a portion. After both Martha and Ellen were married "into comfortable circumstances," or died without issue, all of the estate itself was to go to his brothers John and Frederick, except that if Martha and/or Ellen were married or widowed, and needed money, it was to be provided.⁶ On 12 September 1859, after his first wife Sarah's death, he added a codicil leaving $2000 to Emily Hooper, who he had recently become engaged to, "as a remembrance."^6,19
     On 6 August 1861 his widow Emily waived the provisions made for her in the will, and claimed her dower rights to his real estate and her distributive share in his personal estate.
     The inventory of his estate, dated 22 October 1861 and presented in court 5 November 1861, showed a total value of $13,698.40, with $2350 in real estate and $11,348.40 in personal estate. The real estate consisted of half of a house on Cabot St., a lot on Fayette Place, and 1/4 of the family cemetery lots. His personal estate included a note and interest from John A. Greene valued at $7337.40, furniture, guns and pistols, spyglasses, barometers, sextants, a chronometer, wine, cigars, silver ware and plate, jewelry, a gold watch and chain worth $90, clothing, and lumber, plus $1272.53 in cash and $1030 in state scrip.
     The final account was filed on 1 March 1863 and listed assets of $11,985.88 and payments of $7165.51, for a balance due to the estate of $4820.37, not including real estate. The payments include $5822.78 to his widow Emily as her share of the estate.⁶

     Thomas Bowditch was born in 1733 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.¹ He married Sarah Bancroft, daughter of John Bancroft and Ruth Newhall, on 21 April 1759 (the genealogy of Thomas Bancroft from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register says 27 April 1760, and an article on Bowditch genealogy in the Essex Antiquarian says 21 April 1760) in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^3,4,5 He died on 29 July 1808.^3,5 He was buried at Burying Point Cemetery in Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁶
     He was a mariner in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁵

     Sarah Bancroft was born about 1742 (based on her death date and age at death of 66 years) in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^3,2 She married Thomas Bowditch, son of Ebenezer Bowditch and Mary Turner, on 21 April 1759 (the genealogy of Thomas Bancroft from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register says 27 April 1760, and an article on Bowditch genealogy in the Essex Antiquarian says 21 April 1760) in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^3,2,4 She died on 26 February 1808.^3,4 She was buried at Burying Point Cemetery in Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁵

     Thomas Bowditch was born in September 1761 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,3 He married Lucy Mansfield on 17 September 1786 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁴ He died at sea in April 1807 at age 45, from scurvy.⁵
     He was a mariner³, and was master of the Boston Packet when he died from scurvy in April 1807. He died the day before the ship arrived at Stonington, "after a tedious passage of 210 days" from Calcutta. Most of the crew on board were sick, and the ship was to enter the "Vineyard" immediately.⁵

     Lucy Mansfield was born about 1765 (based on her age at death of 66).² She married Thomas Bowditch, son of Thomas Bowditch and Sarah Bancroft, on 17 September 1786 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.³ She died on 16 December 1831 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, at age 66.²

     Daniel Bowditch was baptized on 10 March 1765 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,3

     Joseph Bowditch was baptized on 6 July 1767 (an article in the Essex Antiquarian says 5 July 1767) in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,3 He drowned on 29 September 1774 or 6 October 1774.¹

     Sarah Bowditch was baptized on 17 September 1769 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,3 She married John Brinlay on 12 May 1793.^1,3
     She and John had four children.¹

     Ebenezer Bowditch was baptized in April 1783 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.³ He married Rebecca Felt on 21 October 1800.¹
     He and Rebecca had one daughter.¹

     Rebecca Felt was born about 1779 (based on her death date and age at death of 26).¹ She married Ebenezer Bowditch, son of Thomas Bowditch and Sarah Bancroft, on 21 October 1800.¹ She died on 16 May 1805.¹

     Richard Bowditch was baptized in April 1783 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.³ He married Sally Collins on 24 May 1807.¹

     Ebenezer Bowditch was born on 26 April 1702 or 1703 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,3 He married Mary Turner, daughter of John Turner and Mary Kitchen, on 15 August 1728.^4,3 He died on 2 February 1768 at age 65.^1,3 He was buried at Burying Point Cemetery in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁵
     He was a shipmaster and merchant in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,3 On 22 October 1726 he lost the armed galley Mary during a hurricane at Port Royal, Jamaica.¹ He lived in Salem at what was later 209 Essex Street.¹ In 1742 he was apparently a proprietor of New Salem, Massachusetts, but never settled there.¹ During his lifetime, he reportedly lost his own savings, borrowed from his son Habakkuk, and lost his savings as well.¹ His estate was valued at £616 15s 4 3/4d.⁶

     Mary Turner was born on 1 November 1706.² She married Ebenezer Bowditch, son of William Bowditch and Mary Gardner, on 15 August 1728. Her father reportedly objected to her marriage, saying she was "forming a connexion so much inferior to what her pretensions in point of property and family might have justified her in aspiring to.... For she had been brought up in ease and affluence."^1,2 She died on 1 May 1785 at age 78.²
     At the time of her marriage she was referred to as "the ancient and honorable Miss Turner," even though she was just 22 years old.³

     John Turner was born in 1676.² He married Mary Kitchen, daughter of Robert Kitchen.¹ He died in 1728.²
     He was an eminent merchant in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.³

     In the Bowditch genealogy the entry for Ebenezer Bowditch, her daughter Mary's husband, lists her name as Mary Kitchen, but the entry for her husband John Turner lists her name as Elizabeth Kitchen.³ After her husband's death, she lived in Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts, with her daughter Elizabeth's family.⁴

     Ebenezer Bowditch was born on 28 September 1729 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^2,1 He married Elizabeth Gilman on 17 July 1755.^1,2 He died on 3 August 1771 at age 41.^2,1 He was buried at Burying Point Cemetery in Essex Co., Massachusetts.³

     John Bowditch was born on 3 April 1732 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^2,1 He married Mary Carlton on 12 July 1759.^2,1
     He was a master mariner in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.² He left on a southern voyage in early 1793, never to be heard from again.^1,3 Administration of his estate was granted to his widow Mary on 14 November 1793 in Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁴

     William Bowditch was born about March 1734 (based on his age at death of 18 years, 9 months) in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.² He died on 29 December 1752.^2,1 He was buried at Burying Point Cemetery in Essex Co., Massachusetts.²

     Habakkuk Bowditch was born on 5 January 1737/38 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.¹ He was baptized on 5 March 1737/38 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,3 He married Mary Ingersoll, daughter of Nathaniel Ingersoll and Bethiah Gardner, on 23 July 1765.^1,3 He died on 28 July 1798 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, at age 60.^1,3 He was buried at Burying Point Cemetery in Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁴
     He was a mariner, and later a cooper.¹ He lived at No. 2 Brown Street in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁵ In 1773 he moved into a small house in Salem Village, Essex Co., Massachusetts, later Danvers, and now part of Peabody.¹ He moved back to Salem about 1780.⁶ He was "uncommonly versed in the Scriptures."¹ His father Ebenezer reportedly borrowed and then lost most of his savings, and he was financially ruined during the Revolutionary War. He eventually started drinking, "ran downhill," and died insolvent.^1,3

     Mary Bowditch was born about 1741 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.¹ She died in 1757.¹ She was buried at Burying Point Cemetery in Essex Co., Massachusetts.²

     Elizabeth Gilman was born about 1732.² She married Ebenezer Bowditch, son of Ebenezer Bowditch and Mary Turner, on 17 July 1755.^1,2 She died on 11 February 1824.² She was buried at Burying Point Cemetery in Essex Co., Massachusetts.³

     Mary Carlton married John Bowditch, son of Ebenezer Bowditch and Mary Turner, on 12 July 1759.^2,1

     Mary Ingersoll married Habakkuk Bowditch, son of Ebenezer Bowditch and Mary Turner, on 23 July 1765.^1,2 She died on 16 December 1783.¹
