He served with his brothers Isaac and Ogle in Capt. John Emory's company of the Queen Anne's Co., Maryland, militia, where their names appear on the rolls dated 6 February 1748/49.1
He and his wife Elizabeth moved to Kent Co., Delaware, sometime before 7 August 17501, when he and his brother William deeded 100 acres of land in Talbot Co., Maryland, to John Plummer, Sr., in exchange for 6000 pounds of tobacco, and were described as being of Kent Co., Delaware.1 He lived in Murderkill Hundred, Kent Co., Delaware, from 1751 to 17551, and in Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co., Delaware, from 1756 to 1764.1
In November 1755 he sold 50 acres of land in Queen Anne's Co., Maryland, to his brother Isaac. This was the same property that his father William had purchased in 1735, and left to his son Thomas in his will, but that was then acquired by John.3
On 4 January 1758 he was granted 250 acres of land in Mispillion Hundred for a yearly quit-rent (i.e., tax) of "1 penny sterling per acre."1 He also bought land in Kent Co. from John Summers in 1761.1
