George Trask (1796-1875). From Atherton P. Mason, "Rev. George Trask, The 'Anti-Tobacco Apostle'," in Proceedings of the Fitchburg Historical Society and Papers Relating to the History of the Town, Vol. III (Fitchburg, Massachusetts: Fitchburg Historical Society, 1902), following p. 86.
George Trask was born on 26 August 1796 in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1 He was married by Rev. John W. Chickering to Ruth Freeman Packard, daughter of Asa Packard and Nancy Quincy, on 23 April 1831 (the History of North Bridgewater says 12 April 1831) in Lancaster, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.3,4,5 He died on 25 January 1875 in Fitchburg, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, at age 78 from heart disease.6,7 He was buried in Fitchburg, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.6
In 1812 he began working in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts, as an apprentice to his brother Israel, who was a well-known maker of Britannia Ware, a pewter-like metal.2 Four years later, in 1816, he opened his own hardware and jewelry store in Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachusetts, where, in his own words, he "made a little money, when it required but little brains and still less knavery."2
In 1819 he was "converted to Christ" and felt that it was his "imperious duty to be a public herald of that love."2 His early education, he felt, was "sadly defective," so to prepare for his new calling he first enrolled at Gorham Academy in Gorham, Cumberland Co., Maine2, then entered Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Cumberland Co., Maine, where he graduated in 1826.5,2 He then entered Andover Theological Seminary in Andover, Essex Co., Massachusetts, graduating in 1829, and was ordained as a minister.5,2
His first parish was in Framingham, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, where he remained about ten years8, then was installed at Warren, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, where he served about ten more years.8 On 21 July 1847 he became minister of the Orthodox Congregational Church in Fitchburg, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, and was dismissed on 18 June 1849.8
Throughout his career he was a strong advocate for causes he believed in, serving as president of various "temperance, moral reform, peace, and abolition societies." He is best known, however, for preaching against the evils of tobacco. A former user himself, he stated that by 1850 he "had become emaciated, tremulous, and cowardly, and physicians said I was at the gates of death." He gave up tobacco completely, which "lifted a loathsome incubus from my soul," and spent the rest of his life preaching against its use.2,8
He and Ruth had the following known children: George Kellogg, Brainerd Packard, Josiah Chapin, Ruth Quincy, Eliza (b 10 May 1840), William Dodge (d in infancy).5
