He was known as "Black Eli" because he had a black beard, and also to distinguish him from his cousin Eli, who had a red beard and was known as "Red Eli."2 After their marriage, he and his first wife Fannie lived on the 240-acre farm he had inherited. Later, when Fannie's health began to deteriorate, they moved into a house he built in LaPlace, Piatt Co., Illinois.2 For several years before his death he suffered from spinal problems.2
He and Fannie had the following known children: Oscar (b 11 October 1878, d 12 October 1878), Albert Ambrose (b 20 October 1880, d 4 April 1958), Mabel Olive (b 5 March 1883, d 6 July 1965), Nellie (b 6 October, d 4 September 1888), Fannie Fern (b 23 November 1889, d 27 June 1908).3 He and his second wife Mary had two known children, Owen M. (b 14 January 1894, d 22 February 1895) and Henry Earl (b 3 March 1896, d 1979). These children spelled their last name as "Wolfe."4
