- E-mail message, Rachel Kovacs to RCJ, 15 August 2013, My uncle Teddy (not to be confused with Great Uncle Ted, who is the only surviving child of Anna (Cresel Runya was her Yiddish name) Levine Nelson and Morris Nelson, said he thinks my grandma Anna was quite young when Jacob Levine died. The Levine family lived on Orchard St. on the Lower East Side--he thinks about 300 or 325 Orchard. He does not know how the family survived financially after Jacob died.

two of my mother's brothers had four children each --Stuart (Teddy, the only survivor, had 4 sons. Eugene (Buddy) had three daughters and a son. Guta (Gussie) Levine groomed Buddy for the rabbinate. He was a Hebrew teacher and scholar on the side, and he dropped out of a rabbinical program to help support the family when my grandfather Morris Nelson had a heart attack. He was always religious, like Guta, who wore a sheitel (wig) in New York when it wasn't cool to do so. Brothers Teddy and Mayer became engineers--engineer; he worMayer helped design the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel; Teddy worked in industry and then for the Army Corps of Engineers. Muriel was a social worker and worked at the U.N. before it had a permanent home in Manhattan. My mother Susie majored in business administration.

two of my mother's brothers had four children each --Stuart (Teddy, the only survivor, had 4 sons. Eugene (Buddy) had three daughters and a son. Guta (Gussie) Levine groomed Buddy for the rabbinate. He was a Hebrew teacher and scholar on the side, and he dropped out of a rabbinical program to help support the family when my grandfather Morris Nelson had a heart attack. He was always religious, like Guta, who wore a sheitel (wig) in New York when it wasn't cool to do so. Brothers Teddy and Mayer became engineers--Mayer helped design the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel; Teddy worked in industry and then for the Army Corps of Engineers. Muriel was a social worker and worked at the U.N. before it had a permanent home in Manhattan. My mother Susie majored in business administration.
