He and his wife Sarah, with their daughters Susan, Sarah, and Mary, and a kinswoman Elizabeth, emigrated from Tenterden, co. Kent, England, to America on the ship Hercules of Sandwich in March 1634/35 and settled at Scituate, Massachusetts.3,7,1,2,6 He was made a freeman there on 7 February 1636/37.1,3
He and his family moved from Scituate to Barnstable, New Plymouth Colony, in 1639.6 In Barnstable he served as a juror and town officer.3 Quoting Freeman's History of Cape Cod, Messinger says that he was "a very prominent man in public affairs."6
His will was dated 8 October 1662. His wife Bridget received the use of his house, garden, and some land for as long as she remained a widow. She also received "all the household stuff she brought with her," plus his two cows "Prosper and Thrivewell." Most of his land and livestock was left to his sons Thomas, Samuel, and John. Each of his daughters Susanna, Mary, Sarah, and Elizabeth, and each of their children, received one shilling. Some of his livestock was left to "his grandchildren, Samuel and Thomas, sons, and Mary and Bathshea, daughters of Thomas Hinckley," and to "Henry Cobb's sons, Samuel and Jonathan." His estate was inventoried by Henry Cobb and William Crocker, and valued at £162 16s.6

Exactly when Thomas Hinckley came to New England is unknown. It apparently was not with his parents on the ship Hercules in March 1634/35. The passenger list names only his parents, their daughters Susan, Sarah, Mary, and a kinswoman Elizabeth.6
In any case, he soon became prominent in the affairs of Barnstable and Plymouth Colony, serving as a deputy by 1645, and as a magistrate and assistant from 1658 to 1680. He became governor of Plymouth Colony in 1681, serving until the colony joined with the Massachusetts Colony in 1691. He also served as a commissioner on the general board of the two colonies from 1678 to 1692.1
He was named in his father's will, dated 8 October 1662. He and his brothers Samuel and John were left most of their father's land and livestock.1
